A Brief Introduction to The Work of HP Lovecraft

HP Lovecraft created one of the most well-developed and popular fictional universes, known as the Cthulhu Mythos. The central theme of the Cthulhu Mythos, and Lovecraft’s work in general, is cosmicism.

Cosmicism is the idea that humankind is insignificant within the universe. The universe is an unfathomably huge, dangerous place. And amidst the vast infinitudes of space and time there are powers that are far older, far greater, and far more evil than the human mind could ever comprehend.

The Cthulhu Mythos describes a universe dark and mysterious, where ancient evil powers weave their tendrils – both literally and figuratively – across time and space.

The works of Lovecraft are unique in their embrace of science fiction within horror. The author himself was deeply influenced by the findings of physics and astronomy, and these themes are interwoven with others throughout his work.
